OpenAI introduced a new image generation tool that lets users produce images in the Studio Ghibli style, and CEO Sam Altman connected with the community by updating his profile picture to one of these creations.
On Wednesday, OpenAI stunned the world by unveiling its built-in image creation tool. Since its launch, social media users have discovered the feature’s knack for mimicking various art styles, eagerly transforming their own images into Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork and stepping into the enchanting world of the famed Japanese animation studio.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman quickly hopped on the bandwagon, swapping his X profile picture for a Studio Ghibli-style rendition and playfully challenging social media users to craft an even better version for him using ChatGPT.
So, what defines Studio Ghibli’s artistic style, and who can tap into ChatGPT’s new feature to bring it to life? Let’s dive deeper.
It's been 24 hours since OpenAI unexpectedly shook the AI image world with 4o image generation.

What is Studio Ghibli art?
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation film studio founded in 1985 by Miyazaki Hayao, Takahata Isao and Suzuki Toshio. The company is known for its high quality filmmaking with hand-drawn animation and rich storytelling.
Studio Ghibli has created some truly unforgettable animated movies, like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke.
Studio Ghibli hasn’t said anything yet about ChatGPT using its art style, but back in 2016, its co-founder Hayao Miyazaki wasn’t shy about his feelings on AI-generated animation. In an interview, he called it an “insult to life itself,” saying, “I can’t even enjoy watching this stuff. The people making it don’t understand real pain at all—I’m honestly grossed out by it. If someone wants to make creepy things, fine, go for it. But I’d never let this tech anywhere near my own work. To me, it’s a total disrespect to what life’s about.”
So, who gets to play with ChatGPT’s new image-making feature? OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it’s rolling out to Plus, Pro, Team, and even Free users of the chatbot. But on Thursday, CEO Sam Altman tweeted on X that the rollout for Free users is hitting the brakes for a bit. Meanwhile, the company says Enterprise and Edu users will get access through the API “soon.”
